so i made a deal with my mother: every time she writes a blog entry, i'll write a blog entry. hopefully, you'll hear from both of us a lot more this way. if you haven't visited her blog, you should. so she blogged today, so i am. today's blog: things i have made/am making.
we'll start with this skirt that i dreamed up months and months ago, and then about 2 months ago, i finally made for myself. the tree skirt:
here's the tree i penned on it up close:
i also just listed a couple more t-shirt bags:
tell your friends!
and, of course, i have a few things on the needles:
this pink heart is a tiny part of a super secret something for my seester.
this is the beginning of a jacket for eva.
and this is the neckband of a sweater for rach to match the dress i made for eva for her birthday.
happy saturday everybody!
someday, i will become a better blogger. until then, some very random photos, mostly for the entertainment of my seester, and because i feel guilty about bugging my mother to blog all the time and not doing any myself.
so. there has been knitting:
it was 105 degrees that day. we drank a lot of water, and took frequent trips to the air conditioned restroom!
the last one is my favorite. isn't he just so cute!
= )
my jonjon left for sxsw today. i hate being without my voonderbob man.= ( so i'm consoling myself with a visit to my seester! i was supposed to leave this morning, but the freaky storm weather killed that idea. thanks to the flexibility of my gracious in-laws and my loverly seester, i'll still get to stay the same amount of time, i'm just leaving a day later and coming home a day later. and since i suddenly had an extra morning before my mr. jonathanly left, i had time to whip this little guy up to go in his "i'll miss you so much" goodie bag:
(sorry, babe, it stuck...)
my poor sewing machine has been quite neglected lately, but sunday afternoon, despite having two sickies in the house, i managed to carve out a little sewing time.
first, i finished fixing the ridiculously large anti-thumb-sucking
glubs (noah's version of gloves) so he could have ample room for his
little fingers to wiggle:
1. friday, noah and i made a jillion tiny play-doh leaves and then decided they needed a tree to go on:
2. my voonderbob hubby bought me a new teapot to replace the poor one that broke.
3. i made a new bag! i kinda want to perfect this one and try to sell it at some local shops. the trim is some of the stuff my seester sent me a few months ago.
sewing the trim on was the scariest part. i've never done it, and i was really afraid that i'd manage to yank off oa bead and get it stuck in the machine somehow.
ta-da! and...
it's reversable! (and in need of pressing.) i'm totally open to suggestions, as long as you don't get your feeling hurt if i don't run with it.
4. some other really big type stuff, but i think they have to wait a few days to go public.
for my seester.= )
remember how my voonderbob hubby got my a sewing machine? it has
not been idle! i've never sewed before and so far i haven't had
any lessons. here's the mahcine:
ok, so what i've done so far (until today) has all been from this book:
it's fabulous! lots of fun and easy projects, once i get some really cool fabric from somewhere like purlsoho i'm totally going to be making all sorts of stuff for our house. i started with the coasters which are basicly hemmed squares, and would really need to be lined with something to actually be useful.
these have been folded up in a drawer for a little while. i don't remember what came next, it was probably the double sided placemats...
ooh, fancy! there are four of these but the last one is not quite done, because i ran out of pink thread.
then the cafe-style apron:
this has actually seen some use, because i'm very messy in the kitchen, and i like aprons! there's a pattern for a full reversable apron that i'm going to do as soon as i get cool fabric for it. i think i may also add a pocket to this one so that i don't have to hunt all over the kitchen for a towel every time i get my hands wet. next i made this really cool placemat that's a little bigger than your average placemat and has a pocket to put flatware in and a ribbon on it so you can roll it up and take it with you to use when you eat outside. here it is rolled up:
and here it is unrolled:
i really really like this! i would probably use it if it wasn't a million degrees outside at lunchtime already. maybe in the fall when it cools down a little i'll make a couple more and noah and jonjon and i will have some picnic lunches. and now, my crowning achievment (so far):
this is the first thing i've made that's 3 dimensional and without a pattern. it's my first attempt at making a bag that jonathan had the idea for. it's even fully lined:
i need to work out how much smaller to make the lining pieces so they're not all bunchy and of course i would like to make the inside out of different fabric, but this is all i had right now. i also want to experiment with making the handles cut out instead of sewn on.
so there you have it, the complete recap of my early sewing exploits. someday i'm sure i'll look back at this stuff and laugh, but for now i'm pretty happy with it. encouragement and tips welcome!= )
